Cummins NTA855 Marine Diesel Engine

Cummins NTA855 marine diesel engine is equipped with PT fuel system, turbocharger and water-to-air intercooler. This marine diesel engine meets the IMO-NOx requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The continuous power of NTA855-M350 marine main engine is 350HP at 1800RPM.

The NTA855 is a battle-tested engine in the marine propulsion industry. It's a 14-liter inline six-cylinder four-stroke turbocharged engine with air-to-water intercooling. For years, it has been used on workboats, fishing vessels, and transport boats worldwide, serving as both main propulsion and auxiliary generators. Its market presence is very large, and many ship owners choose it because of its durability, readily available spare parts, and reliability under harsh marine conditions.

The NTA855 uses Cummins' mature PT fuel system, offering stable injection control and relatively complete combustion at low speeds with good black smoke control. Torque output is biased towards low to mid-range RPMs, reaching maximum torque at just 1500 RPM. This provides sufficient power for vessel starts and heavy-load climbs, with good transient response and no noticeable lag when the throttle is pressed. The NTA855 engine boasts a wide power range, with common configurations ranging from over 300 horsepower to 450 horsepower. Most models have a rated speed of 1800 rpm, catering to the propulsion needs of small and medium-sized vessels of varying tonnages. It can also be used as a constant-speed auxiliary generator.

Two cooling options are available: heat exchanger cooling and keel cooling, selectable based on vessel design and seawater environment. A spin-on water treatment filter is standard, inhibiting corrosion in seawater circuits and optimized for the saline cooling water environment at sea. The lubrication system uses a spin-on oil filter, simplifying maintenance and disassembly; an enlarged oil pan is optional, allowing for extended oil change intervals.

 

 

 

In practical shipboard applications, the NTA855 is well-suited for near-shore fishing vessels, harbor workboats, transport vessels, small tugboats, and some yacht auxiliary power systems. While not a product packed with cutting-edge technology, its mature structure and lack of complex electronic components make it easy for onboard engineers to operate and maintain. With a wide global service network and ample supply of spare parts, there are no bottlenecks in the procurement of spare parts, whether for new or used machines. This is the key reason why many ship owners continue to choose it.
